Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, one of the world's largest generic manufacturers, said on Thursday that it's considering a 14 percent generics discount on its generic drug Nexium.
"We think the discount will be very beneficial for our shareholders and we believe that the generic and the generic and the price-grew market share for our brand will be better than what we had previously," Teva Pharmaceutical Industries CEO Charles Ritzaus said in a statement. "We believe that our generics and the generics of the brand and the price-grew market share will be better than what we have seen in the retail pharmacy space in recent years."
The discount, made possible with a prescription discount card, will also help cut the cost of some prescription drugs for people who have heartburn, Ritzaus said.
In addition to Nexium and its generic, generics Cidro Connect, Diclofenac and Indapamide will be available starting January 1, 2025. Generic alternatives Januvia and Sustenna are also being offered.
Nexium, which is also available in generic form, is the active ingredient in Protonix. This drug is also used to treat fluid retention and to treat the symptoms of congestive heart failure and to prevent osteoarthritis.
Generic drugs tend to be expensive, so it's important to have government contracts with drug manufacturers to ensure they're providing quality and affordable generic alternatives, Ritzaus said.
